I started writing during my sophomore year in college.
I was running around the lake on campus during a typically cold winter in South Bend, Indiana—snow on the ground, lake frozen, condensating breath.
One of my buddies shouted back to the rest of us, running on the trail in a line, “What’s one thing you want to do before you die?”
My answer was: I want to write a book.
After I said it, I thought to myself, what am I waiting for? So I started writing that book immediately when I got back to my dorm room.
Almost a decade later, I’ve now written and self-published five books (and counting) on Amazon. You can find them here.
But I still have a lot to learn as a writer.
I left my job in March 2021 to focus on my writing full-time.
Since then, I’ve been writing a lot, but most of it I haven’t been sharing with anyone, except for the occasional poem that I send to my girlfriend.
My hope for this newsletter is that it will help with getting my writing out there on a more regular cadence, other than just the annual self-published paperback.
By the way, when I say “writing” …
My writing has changed over the years.
I wrote my first book (don’t buy it; it’s not great) the only way I knew how, the way I was taught in my high school AP English course.
It wasn’t until senior year of college that I would take my first creative writing class.
Since then, I’ve been treading my own path. For the most part, I write poetry and short prose. But I also like to experiment with new forms. I even wrote an entire book using the speech-to-text feature on my phone.
In this newsletter, you can expect poems, short stories, book reviews, essays, dream journal entries, thoughts on writing itself, unasked-for life advice, and various other forms of the written word (some of which I am yet to discover, I’m sure).
For examples of my writing, you can scroll through the archives.
But none of this matters without YOU!
