Remembering who I am at the airport
At home, amid the homogeneity that made you who you are, it’s harder to tell that you have your own individual identity. You are one of many others who are all more or less the same as you.
When you travel, you see yourself in contrast to the rest of the world. Your own identifying qualities are delineated in comparison to the other people who come from different places.
Standing in the security line at the airport, hearing other languages spoken, you’re more aware that you speak English. Seeing other styles of clothing, you’re more aware that you wear jeans and a white t-shirt.
