the people in your life can and should change over time. but there is value to long-term friends, especially those who are willing and able to grow in pace with you (even if not in the same direction). I find this can give a lot of important perspective.

i also think that society should normalize people dropping in and out of friendship more, its rarely a personal slight and most often a change in circumstance

That's interesting about how your long-term friends might be growing in a different direction. Agreed that this can offer perspective. Does there have to be some commonality though? Like, maybe your friend is no longer interested in the same topics, but they still have a work ethic, appreciation for art, love of travel, etc. that you have in common.

Agreed on it not being a personal slight. And what I'm realizing as we're getting older is that you can come back to friendships too. Even though you didn't talk for 2-3 years, your paths might intersect again in an organic way.
